color: #222222;\">At a restricted meeting of the ESA Council held in Paris, Mr Josef Aschbacher was appointed as ESA Director of Earth Observation.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">Mr Aschbacher is currently the Head of Programme Planning and Coordination in the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes at ESA ESRIN, located in Frascati, Italy.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">Born in Austria, he studied at the University of Innsbruck, graduating with a Master&#8217;s and a Doctoral Degree in Natural Sciences.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">He has 35 years of professional experience in Earth observation.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">His professional career in ESA began in 1990.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">During 1994-2001 he worked at the European Commission Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy, where he was the Scientific Assistant to the Director of the Space Applications Institute.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">He returned to ESA HQ in Paris in 2001, and in 2014, he was promoted to his current position where he is responsible for planning ESA&#8217;s Earth observation programmes and for formulating and implementing programmatic and strategic decisions across the Directorate.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">He is taking over from Mr Volker Liebig, who has been Director of Earth Observation since October 2004.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><strong><span style=\"color: #222222;\">About the European Space Agency<\/span><\/strong><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">The European Space Agency (ESA) provides Europe&#8217;s gateway to space.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">ESA is an intergovernmental organisation, created in 1975, with the mission to shape the development of Europe&#8217;s space capability and ensure that investment in space delivers benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">ESA has 22 Member States: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, of whom 20 are Member States of the EU.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">ESA has established formal cooperation with seven other Member States of the EU. Canada takes part in some ESA programmes under a Cooperation Agreement.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, ESA can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country. It is working in particular with the EU on implementing the Galileo and Copernicus programmes.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\">ESA develops the launchers, spacecraft and ground facilities needed to keep Europe at the forefront of global space activities.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: normal;
