With this milestone, a better understanding of Earth\u2019s winds is another step closer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(3, 30, 49); text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">The contract, worth \u20ac32.57 million, was signed at ESA headquarters in Paris, France, by ESA\u2019s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Josef Aschbacher, and CEO of Arianespace, St\u00e9phane Isra\u00ebl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(3, 30, 49); text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Josef Aschbacher said, \u201cAeolus has certainly had its fair share of problems. To do so it carries one of the most challenging pieces of space technology ever developed: the Aladin wind \u2018lidar\u2019 \u2013 a laser form of radar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Several years in the making, this state-of-the-art instrument houses two powerful lasers, a large telescope and very sensitive receivers.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"s_2\" class=\"section\" style=\"font-weight: normal; color: rgb(3, 30, 49); text-align: justify;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9938\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9938\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Aladin_joins_Aeolus_small.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9938\" src=\"http:\/\/revoscience.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Aladin_joins_Aeolus_small.jpg\" alt=\"Aladin joins Aeolus\" width=\"170\" height=\"255\" title=\"\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9938\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aladin joins Aeolus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">The laser generates ultraviolet light that is beamed towards Earth. This light bounces off air molecules and small particles such as dust, ice and droplets of water in the atmosphere. The fraction of light that is reflected back to the satellite is collected by Aladin\u2019s telescope and measured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">The movement of the air molecules, particles or droplets cause this reflected light to change frequency slightly. By comparing the frequencies returned from various altitudes with the original laser, the winds below the satellite can be determined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Despite numerous setbacks developing it, recent tests show that Aladin is now up to the demanding task that lies ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">With these development problems resolved, engineers at Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage, UK, are now busy adding the instrument to the satellite. Once Aeolus is complete and thoroughly tested, the satellite will be prepared for shipping to Europe\u2019s Spaceport in French Guiana.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"s_3\" class=\"section\" style=\"font-weight: normal; color: #031e31;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">Vega rockets can place 300\u20131500 kg satellites into low orbits. The first ESA Earth observation satellite to be taken into orbit on a Vega was Sentinel-2A in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Josef Aschbacher said, \u201cAeolus has certainly had its fair share of problems.
