HONG KONG– Public awareness of gerontechnology in Hong Kong continues to rise, with 78% of citizens familiar with the term this year, up from 76% in 2023, according to a survey by Lingnan University.
Researchers interviewed 869 residents aged 18 and above during the Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES) held from Nov. 20 to 23. The study found healthcare (72%) and exercise (52%) were the areas of greatest interest, ahead of dining (42%) and living (38%).
Optimism about gerontechnology products was high, with 95% of respondents expressing confidence in their potential. But cost remains a hurdle: 60% cited high prices as the main barrier, 52% pointed to a lack of product information, and 34% said they were unclear where to buy such products. The proportion of citizens who consider gerontechnology “too expensive” has risen compared with last year.
Support for government involvement was strong. About 92% backed more financial assistance for elderly care homes and senior service organisations to purchase gerontechnology, while 90% favoured expanding the Elderly Health Care Voucher Scheme to subsidise older adults. More than 91% agreed the government should increase support for industry research and development, and 95% said universities play a key role in advancing the field.
Dr Chloe Siu Pui-yee, senior lecturer at Lingnan University’s School of Graduate Studies, said interest in healthcare and exercise may be linked to the Hong Kong government’s hosting of the 15th National Games this year, which raised public awareness of sport.
She added that respondents hoped the government would address age-related conditions such as sarcopenia, which reduces muscle mass and strength and raises the risk of falls. Preventive investment in exercise and health, she said, could lower future healthcare costs and deliver wider social benefits.
Lingnan University said it remains committed to cross-sector collaboration and improving the quality of life for older adults as Hong Kong faces the challenges of an ageing society.
