Dr. Mehmet Oz released a statement Friday defending himself after a group of physicians wrote a letter to Columbia University Medical School asking for the TV personality’s dismissal from the college’s department of surgery.

The letter sent to the Ivy League institution insisted he should be removed from the role of vice chairman due to his “egregious lack of integrity” and promotion of “quack treatments” with no scientific support showing they work, according to The Associated Press.

USA Today reports Oz responded in a statement explaining his show provides “multiple points of a view” on a topic in order to “bring the public information that will help them on their path to be their best selves.”

Oz acknowledges that he does give his own views on certain subjects although that input is provided “without conflict of interest” he continued.

However, the noted heart surgeon has come under scrutiny before for his affiliation with health products of dubious medical value.

Oz said in Senate hearing last year not all of the supplements he has discussed on his show would “pass Food and Drug Administration muster” while the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reached a$9 million dollar settlement with a guest of the doctor’s program, Lindsay Duncan, in January after the agency argued Duncan used his appearance to build a business using falsified claims to sell weight-loss pills.

USA Today added that Columbia would not be taking any action against Dr. Oz.

A spokesperson for the college, Doug Levy, told the publication Columbia “does not regulate faculty engagement in public discourse.”
