Kathmandu, – Hyundai’s all-electric flagship SUV, the IONIQ 9, has clinched the prestigious title of German Premium Car of the Year 2026, marking a major milestone for the automaker just three months after the vehicle’s market debut.

The award, presented by an independent jury of 40 leading automotive journalists, recognizes the IONIQ 9’s standout performance in design, technology, and sustainability. Hyundai’s latest EV triumphed over strong competitors with its sleek aerodynamic styling, advanced 800-volt fast-charging system, and a spacious three-row interior designed for personalized, lounge-like comfort.

“This vehicle reflects what we stand for—innovative design, a progressive mindset, and a commitment to human-centered, sustainable mobility,” said Xavier Martinet, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Europe. “Awards like this affirm our direction and inspire us to keep pushing boundaries in electrified mobility.”

Built on Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the IONIQ 9 offers ultra-fast charging from 10 to 80 percent in just 24 minutes and delivers a driving range exceeding 500 kilometers (WLTP, depending on variant). The SUV also features Hyundai’s latest Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC), AI-powered voice recognition, and sustainable materials that reinforce the brand’s environmental focus.

The recognition comes as Hyundai continues to expand its electric footprint globally, including in Nepal. With models like the Kona EV and IONIQ 5 already leading the domestic EV market, and local assembly operations through Laxmi Intercontinental Pvt. Ltd., Hyundai Nepal is working to make premium electric mobility more accessible to Nepali consumers.

The German Car of the Year (GCOTY) Award is one of Europe’s most respected automotive honors. Vehicles launched within the past year are evaluated across five categories—Compact, Premium, Luxury, New Energy, and Performance—based on innovation, efficiency, and design excellence.

Hyundai’s win in the Premium category underscores its growing influence in the global EV sector and its commitment to redefining what premium electric driving means for the future.
