Dr Chloe Sui Pui-yi, Senior Lecturer at the School of Graduate Studies and Institute of Policy Studies at Lingnan University, expresses her aspiration to train more Gerontechnology Ambassadors in the future, fostering greater youth awareness of Hong Kong’s ageing population and promoting intergenerational empathy.

Lingnan University’s Jockey Club Gerontechnology and Smart Ageing in Place Project has received the highest 3-Star Certificate in the Elderly Care Award Scheme 2024-25 for the second consecutive year.

Organized by the Coordinating Committee for Elderly Services of the Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing Districts Social Welfare Department, the 3-star rating represents the top award, acknowledging the project’s excellence in community outreach and innovation in elderly care.

Over the past year, Lingnan University’s project team has organized 23 activities in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing for over 600 people aged 65 and above. These events included gerontechnology talks, smartphone workshops, and hands-on experience with smart products to encourage independent living and digital understanding in older adults.

Dr. Chloe Sui Pui-yi, Senior Lecturer at the School of Graduate Studies and Institute of Policy Studies at Lingnan University, and Ms. Hayden Lee Hoi-shan, Assistant Manager of the Institute of Policy Studies, said, “Lingnan University strives to be a leading liberal arts institution in the digital age, with a strong focus on our motto, Education for Service.”

They said that this award highlights our longstanding commitment to civic engagement through gerontechnology. This project covers Hong Kong’s 18 districts and outlying islands.

They also emphasized raising awareness among young people about the aging population and the necessity to train more Gerontech Ambassadors. Further, growing numbers of undergraduates are participating in gerontech courses and volunteer work, improving intergenerational empathy and social innovation.

Dr. Sui added, “Due to Hong Kong’s aging population, there is an urgent need to support the elderly and their caregivers at the grassroots level. We encourage care providers to collaborate with tertiary institutions to upgrade outreach services for the elderly.”

“Caregivers face increasing pressure, and we hope that more neighborhood-based mutual support networks can be developed to foster a caring, elder-friendly culture,” she explained.

The university’s Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honors) in Health and Social Services Management (JS7305) is one of the most sought-after JUPAS programs this year, with nearly 36 applicants competing for each place.

The program addresses healthcare and social services management and prepares students for careers in NGOs, public service, corporate social responsibility, and policy research.
