Apple unveiled a new mobile health program today called ResearchKit.
Jeff Williams, Apple’s senior vice president of operations, discussed the new initiative with the gathered crowd of journalists.
This software will let iPhone users turn their devices into diagnostic tools and get involved in a vast range of medical research, according to Recode.
Apple teamed up with a variety of medical institutions like UCLA, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, University of Rochester, Mt. Sinai Hospital and Xuanwu Hospital.
The Verge mentioned that the University of Oxford and Stanford University were partners in this endeavor too.
UCLA and Dana-Farber are working on a tool to assist with breast cancer research, and Mass General’s app measures glucose levels. University of Rochester and Xuanwu Hospital made an application for Parkinson’s capable of measuring voice or hand tremors.
The Next Web reports that Mt. Sinai’s app “is aimed at helping those affected manage when to use their inhaler and understand how often it’s used.”
Williams assured the audience that all of the data would be safe and secure. The first five apps (mentioned above) are available today, but the full suite of tools will be available next month.
