Abu Dhabi, May 21 – The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) opened its thirty-first Council meeting on Wednesday at its headquarters in Abu Dhabi, with more than 300 government representatives attending in person and online.
The two-day meeting will review progress on IRENA’s work programme and set collective priorities for the next phase of the global energy transition. Discussions will focus on strengthening energy security through renewables and the role of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, digitalisation, and electrification.
“Changes in today’s global energy landscape are affecting not only the energy sector, but entire economies, particularly in the world’s most vulnerable communities,” IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera said. “This Council convenes at a critical moment as Membership discusses priorities for the next phase of the transition.”
Council Chair H.E. Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said energy security, economic stability, and food security are “inextricably linked,” adding that IRENA’s role is vital in navigating a period of transformation.
The Council will also review implementation of IRENA’s 2026-2027 Work Programme and Budget and begin developing its Medium-term Strategy for 2028-2032.
